Can McDonald’s Fries and Diet Coke Relieve Migraines? Experts Weigh In

A recent trend on TikTok has users claiming that a combination of McDonald’s French fries and Diet Coke—dubbed the “McMigraine meal”—can provide relief from migraine headaches. While this fast-food remedy may seem unconventional, some medical experts suggest there could be scientific reasons why it might help certain individuals.

Caffeine’s Role:
Diet Coke contains approximately 46 milligrams of caffeine per 12-ounce serving. Caffeine is known to have vasoconstrictive properties, meaning it can narrow blood vessels. During a migraine, blood vessels in the brain may dilate, leading to pain. By constricting these vessels, caffeine might alleviate migraine symptoms. Additionally, caffeine can enhance the effectiveness of common pain relievers and is a component in some over-the-counter migraine medications.

The Impact of Salt and Carbohydrates:
French fries are high in sodium, which can help replenish electrolytes lost during dehydration—a common migraine trigger. The salt may also influence fluid balance in the brain, potentially reducing swelling and pain. Moreover, the carbohydrates in fries can stabilize blood sugar levels, as low glucose can be another migraine trigger.

Expert Cautions:
While some individuals report relief from this combination, medical professionals caution against relying on fast food as a regular treatment. High intake of processed foods can lead to other health issues. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized migraine management strategies.
